I didn’t have any doubt his grandma could pull it off. She had created some extraordinary costumes for my brother and I in our youth (and, um, even through university). The biggest challenge? When she first put the mailbox on, it tilted backward and was difficult for her to walk in. I made some straps that attached to the inside of the box and went around her waist to keep the box in place. I also had to attach the candy bag to the inside of the mailbox so that when you opened the mailbox door, treats went into the bag and not out the bottom of the costume.”

“He got a chef’s jacket and hat for his birthday. It took a day of labour and $50 – I was gung-ho of course, but had to recruit my husband to help me make the torso. Tools and materials:

• White paper pastry cups
• 1/4-inch white ribbon
• White plastic headband
• Scissors
• Paintbrush
• Hot-glue gun
• Safety pins
• 100 small coffee filters (8- to 10-cup size)
• 50 industrial-size coffee filters
• White shirt
• White A-line skirt
• 5/8-inch-wide ribbon
• 1/4-inch dowel
• White paint
• Mayonnaise jar
• Ironing board or dress form
• Crinoline petticoat

Steps:

1. Create the shirt jabot. You have to turn 10 to 12 small filters inside out, fold in half, and trim off corners (throughout project, you can cut 5 or 6 filters at a time). Then, hot-glue to 5/8-inch-wide white ribbon of desired length. Safety-pin ribbon to center front of shirt.

2. For the Skirt you have to put skirt on an ironing board or dress form to get that shape. Slit filters to center and cut off base, leaving 1/2- inch flap on inner edge. Glue filters in rows around skirt. Don’t forget to trim around waist, in front, and on sides.

3. To create the shoulder ruffles you start with cutting 2 pieces of 5/8-inch-wide ribbon about 12 inches long. Slit 6 small filters to center and cut base off, leaving 1/2-inch flap on inner edge; notch flap to create tabs for gluing. Next, wrap each ribbon around roll of duct tape or mayonnaise jar to make U shape; hot-glue 3 filters onto each ribbon, one at a time. Safety-pin ribbons to shoulders of shirt.

4. For collar you need to measure wearer’s neck and then add 2 inches, and cut 2-inch-wide white ribbon to that measurement. Turn under 1/4 inch at each end of ribbons; attach 2-inch-long piece of self-adhesive 5/8-inch Velcro. Slit small filter to center; remove base, leaving 1/2 inch flap. It’s important to wrap ribbon around duct-tape roll or mayonnaise jar; hot-glue filters, 1 layer at a time, filling width of ribbon, and trim as desired.

5. When you start to design the cuffs, measure wearer’s wrist, add 2 inches, and cut 2 pieces of 1/4-inch-wide ribbon to that measurement. Then, you have to turn ribbons under 1/4 inch on each end; attach 5/8-inch-wide self-adhesive Velcro strips to overlap. Wrap ribbons around a small jar. Slit 6 small filters to center and cut base off, leaving 3/4-inch flap on inner edge. Notch flap; hot-glue 3 layers of filters onto each ribbon.

6. The tiara is made by by cutting away all but 1/8 inch of the bottom of a small coffee filter, notching the inner edge. Hot-glue it onto a white plastic headband.

7. The wand is made from 1/4-inch dowel painted white. Next, glue two white paper pastry cups to the top, along with several strands of 1/4-inch ribbon.

• 8 by 10 inches each of orange, white, and green felt
• needle and thread
• 1-inch-wide black elastic
• butterlfy template
• 1 1/2 yards dark brown wool felt
• scissors
• 1 yard polyurethane foam
• 1/4 yard blue felt
• brown headband
• 2 brown pipe cleaners

The first thing you have to do is to fold dark brown felt in half, place the butterlfy on top. Align left side with fold, and cut out, but without cutting at fold. Repeat with piece of foam and then repeat process with the amount of brown felt and foam that remains, but this time it will be along the fold.

Cut out 2 sets of markings from colored felt, but use a template for that. Start to topstich markings to each felt wing. Stack pieces as whole foam wing, felt half wings, facedown, faceup and foam half wings.

Stich around perimeter with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Next, you have to turn right side out. The whipstitch centre opening has to be closed and this will be underside of wings.

Cut two 11-inch elastic strips and hand-sew crossed straps onto underside of wings and stitch through one layer of foam and felt. In order to make butterlfy antennae, you have to wrap cleaners around headband and then curl ends.

Materials

For sleeves, you have to cut a neckhole between the tights and legs and cut off toes.

2. For the face you need to cut the doily in half. Decorate the edge on forehead and hold in place. Holding doily and dab face paint on forehead with a makeup sponge. You also have to stencil the lacy pattern and then paint around scalloped edges by covering those parts around the nose and eyes. Do the same thing for cheeks and the rest of the face. Keep in mind that lips should be painted white.

3. The next thing that you have to do is to put on a long white skirt. Pull waistband down over torso, put head through neckhole, slip arms into stocking legs and put on white camisole.

4. Tie sash around waist and adjust tulle and tie tulle around neck. This will make the skirt full.

5. The trimmed lace fabric has to make scalloped edges of veil, drape lace over head and pin or clip in place.

6. The flowers you’ll use have to be coated with floral spray. Then, bunch and tie with ribbon.
